PHILADELPHIA, Pa. —

Attorneys for former Penn State University President Graham Spanier held a news conference Wednesday to dispute findings against their client published in the Freeh Commission report.

Former FBI Director Louis Freeh's report identifies Spanier as one of four Penn State leaders who covered up Jerry Sandusky's abuses in order to spare the university bad publicity.

Spanier's attorneys defended him Tuesday and said if Spanier knew anything sexual or criminal was happening, he would have reported it to the proper authorities.

The attorney's blasted former Freeh directly, criticizing him for what they say was ignoring evidence. They said Freeh's report put too much emphasis on conflicting statements by former coaching assistant Mike McQueary and what he said he witnessed in a shower in 2001.

Spanier and late head football coach Joe Paterno were fired in November. Spanier has not been criminally charged and he was not on-hand for the news conference, which ended around 11:40 a.m.

6 News' Gary Sinderson is in Philadelphia and will have more on today's news conference in our evening reports.
