The men who played for Joe Paterno are still shocked and saddened by the Freeh Report.
Chuck Burkhart was the quarterback on the 1968 team that helped put Penn State and Joe Paterno on the map.
“Am I disappointed if all this happened the way they said it did. Yeah.. because he’s better than that and he would know he’s better than that.”
Burkhart has fond memories of his days in State College.
Like many players he credits Paterno and Penn State to the success in his life and that makes the Jerry Sandusky scandal all the more difficult.
“We were always told to be straight forward, take our medicine and do what’s right.”
There have been calls to tear down the statue of the legendary coach that sits outside Beaver Stadium, but Burkhart is urging Penn State and others not to rush to judgment and do something they may regret.
He said anger will not change what happened, so instead of pointing the finger he wants the focus to be on the young men abused by Sandusky.
“To me the humane thing, the right thing, is to really do what is necessary to get each of those kids as close to back on track as you can so they can feel good about themselves and move forward.”
Burkhart said his heart breaks for the victims, but Penn State still has a chance to do what is right.
“When it comes to young kids there can’t be a question to what was right and what wasn’t right. If we can’t protect kids we aren’t much of a society.”
Chuck Burkhart still loves his university and wants people to remember it was four people who made this mistake.
The former quarterback now lives in Texas and runs the C-5 Youth Foundation that helps at risk children.
