"Free" Style School

Centre County —

Charles Eisenstein is trying to gather support for what is being called a "democratic" or "free" school. Unlike traditional schools, at the "free" school, children direct their own education. Parents gathered Tuesday to find out more about the school. Eisenstein said learning would be completely self-motivated and children would also have input in the rules, hiring and school policy. Eisenstein, a father of three, said he believes the school would benefit many children.

"If you spend all your schooling doing assignments and mandatory curriculum, then you never get a chance to explore. So, I'd say students and parents who want the chance to explore and find themselves and what they would love to do in life would benefit from a school like this," said Eisenstein.

About 60 "free" style schools exist nationwide, including The Circle School, in Harrisburg. Sixty-five students from kindergarten to 12th grade currently attend that school.
