Fresh Spinach To Be Back On Shelves At One Supermarket Chain

Centre County —

Fresh spinach could be back on the shelves at Wegmans Supermarket as early as Thursday, according to a company spokeswoman. Word that the vegetable would once again be available was welcome news for shoppers at the supermarket's State College location.

All grocery stores stopped selling fresh spinach earlier this month after an E. Coli outbreak was linked to it. Now, Wegmans has decided to put it back on its shelves.

Company spokeswoman, Jo Natale, says the decision was made after consulting with the Food and Drug Administration, which has determined the vegetable is safe to sell. Natale adds that the re-stocked spinach will not be from California, where the contamination initially occurred. Instead it will be from New Jersey, Colorado and Canada.

Signs in the stores will clearly notify customers what they are buying and where it is from.
