Funding Cut For Community Education Councils

ST. MARYS, Pa. —

Funding has been eliminated for several educational centers across Pennsylvania.

There are eight Community Education Councils in the state.

Officials said the state approved $2 million in funding in their budget. Gov. Ed Rendell eliminated that funding earlier this month.

Officials at the Community Education Council in St. Marys in Elk County said they'll be able to survive for at least a year without state funding. That's because they saved money over the years.

But officials said many other Community Education Councils could close due to the cuts.

The location in Elk County works with Penn State and Pittsburgh University to offer college classes.

Officials said around 600 people are enrolled in classes for the spring semester at the Elk County facility.
