Future of Clearfield building destroyed by fire explored

By Rich Wisniewski

CLEARFIELD, Pa —

It was a late night fire in the town of Clearfield that damaged three buildings and left several homeless.

One of those people is Tom Norris and he remembers that night when Ethan's Cafe went up in flames.

"It was surreal, to say the least," he said.

He lived in the apartments above the restaurant. Now, just about two weeks since that fire, the building that served as a cafe and home, is empty and covered with burnt spots, with nothing but police tape and orange cones sitting out front.

Town officials describe the building as a total loss and as a result it will be knocked down.

"Our heart goes out to Ethan's Cafe, as well as the employees and the residents of the area that are displaced from their homes," said Borough Operations Manager Leslie Stott.

As of now there is no date set for the demolition. Sources tell six news, there's still a debate about whether insurance money or grant money will cover the knock down.

But the question is, what will happen with the space once the building is taken down?

Most of the residents in the area want to see Ethan's back, they say it was a comfortable place that became a prominent business in town.

Fellow business owners agree, saying it was a great lunch time spot.

In the meantime, there is still no word on what caused the fire.

A benefit dinner scheduled for March 2nd at the Expo two building at the Clearfield Fairgrounds.
