Future of NDIC offices remains up in the air

By Scott MacFarlane

Johnstown, Pa -- The U.S. Government will have to find a new tenant or a new plan to fill office space on Washington Street in Johnstown.

And it will have to do so by August 1st.

That shutdown of the National Drug Intelligence Center is creating some new questions and new concerns in Cambria County.

The NDIC closes June 15th.

A source from the U.S. Justice Department tells me it will stop paying rent and will abandon the building on July 31st.

The Justice Department admits it is n ot sure what will happen with the facility after that date.

An obscure federal agency called the “General Services Administration” will be put in charge of the government’s lease.

As for the workers remaining at NDIC, 6 News has learned 57 of them have been transferred to the Drug Enforcement Agency and nearly all of those jobs are located in Washington, D.C.

Johnstown Area Regional Industries is working to find work for those employees who did not want to leave their hometown.

The NDIC is also trying to help these people land on their feet.

Last week, workers were allowed to visit a job fair on company time.

Since February, 25 people have left NDIC.  11 found news in the Johnstown area, three others retired.
