Gallitzin Fire Co. collecting toys, still looking for needy families

By Melanie Gillespie

GALLITZIN, Pa. —

It's the season of giving, and that's what the Gallitzin Fire Company is intending to do this Christmas, but it may need a few more families to take its donations.

Gallitzin Fire Company is in its fourth year of its toy drive.

The donations have grown so much, it's not just toys but also turkey dinners.

However, unlike any other year, this season the company is still searching for needy families.

Fire Chief Mike Sanders describes this year's donations in one word.

"Overwhelming. We got more donations this year, toy wise, than we have in the past years."

A box sitting at the Dollar General is filled with dolls, barbies and toy cars.

Gallitzin Fire Company's fourth annual toy drive is in full swing, but this year there's something missing.

"People seem like they're not stepping forward this year. I don't know if they're embarrassed to ask for help again, but we're always here to help, " Sanders said.

Right now, the company has only seven families signed up, but it has enough toys and turkeys for about 15.

"I just want to get it out there that people can call for help," Sanders said.

When some pantries and non-profits are struggling to keep up with demand, Gallitzin is just hoping the need gets filled.

"Everybody's not working as many as hours and stuff, so they just need help with their kids, and we just give the meal as an extra bonus," Sanders explained.

After a month of raising donations, Sanders said the feeling you get when delivering toys is what it all comes down to.

"It's a lot of fun. It's fun to go to the houses and see the kids' faces. We take Santa Claus on the fire trucks, red lights on; they really get a kick out of it. It's just nice to see them smile."

The fire company is still accepting donations until December 15.

It serves Gallitzin Borough, Tunnelhill borough and Gallitzin Township.
