ELK COUNTY, Pa. —

It has been a problem for two years now -- more elk roaming in Elk County.

While many would think residents would be used to these large animals, the Pennsylvania Game Commission said the population is increasing.

Doty McDowell, a wildlife conservation officer with the PA Game Commission told 6 News the elk have become a problem, specifically in Weedville.

"We have tried to address it through our hunting season. We have tried to address it through an anti-feeding educational effort, but there are just more elk here than those two things are probably going to solve short term," McDowell said.

Officials said two sub populations of elk, mostly cows and calfs have moved toward Weedville.

McDowell believes there is between 23-25 elk roaming throughout Weedville.

Over the last several months the Game Commission and PennDOT has been trying to find ways to alert residents, but more importantly drivers of the elk potentially near the roadways.

McDowell said in 2012 there were about 12 crashes involving the elk.

"Nobody wants these large animals living in a community like this," he said.

Over the last two years residents have been very vocal.

Not only has there been crashes involving the elk along Route 255, but neighbors have complained about the elk damaging their property.

On Thursday night leaders from the Pennsylvania Game Commission will address the issue.

Officials will discuss short term and long term plans to hopefully move the elk out of Weedville.

"The people that make the decisions are coming to the meeting. It's a good opportunity to hear straight from them. Maybe there is someone in the community with an idea that we haven't thought of," he said.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the Bennetts Valley Senior Center along Plum Street in Weedville.
