WEEDVILLE, Pa —
Residents in the small town of Weedville, Elk County are tired of the growing Elk population in their area. It's become such a problem that the Pennsylvania Game Commission has been working to come up with a plan to try to get rid of them.
"The residents in this area have been very patient, but now they just want some answers," said Doty McDowell, with the Game Commission.
The main problem here is regarding safety. The increase in Elk mean more and more hang along major roads like Route 255 which is a problem especially for those drivers who aren't familiar with the area. Neighbors tell me that three Elk were struck and killed, just this week alone.
"I mean I was driving up here and one came running across the road, and then seconds later there come two more. Then traffic was held up for a while," said DuBois resident Frank Troyan, who made the trip to the meeting on Thursday night.
They're also becoming a nuisance for residents in the area who have to see herds of them everyday in their yards.
The game commission presented some long and short term plans to the audience on Thursday night to try to control the elk situation.
First, they plan on cutting off the antlers of the elk. According to the game commission, the antlers are the elks survival tool; they use them for fighting, food, etc, so if they don't have them anymore they will have to relocate.
They also plan on hazing them -or in other words, harassing them. Harassing the elk enough will make them scatter and leave the area.
Another plan is to trap them (which will be easier to do without the antlers.) By trapping them, they will be removed from the area.
Long term, the game commission plans to use satellite technology to find the elk in the area. That will give them a broad idea as to where they are and they will be able to scare them off.
Then there's also more hunting plans to put in effect.
