Gamesa Jobs

Cambria County —

Over 300 people have applied for jobs with the Spanish-based wind-turbine company, Gamesa, so far. Officials say five supervisors have been hired and another 23 applicants are to be hired by October. The company is to hire roughly 100 people in the next few months. Officials say many new employees will then head to Spain for training with all expenses paid by Gamesa.

Larry Stupi is helping in the process with CareerLink. He tells Channel 6 News, "They feel it is worth getting the people trained and trained properly in order that production runs smoothly and the quality of the product is there. So, the expense is worth the cost of sending the people to Spain."

If you want a Gamesa job you must apply at the Cambria County CareerLink by Thursday and you could be working by Christmas. The Gamesa plant, located in the Industrial Park in Ebensburg, off Route 219, is going up. Construction crews are putting up the steel shell now.

Cambria County Commissioner, PJ Stevens, tells Channel 6 News, "The shocking thing is the size of the facility. The magnitude of this project is unbelievable when you drive by it. It's moving along. It's moving along, I think, quicker than anticipated."

So much so Cambria County officials say production could start by December or spring.

But, the Gamesa site isn't the only thing under construction. Crews will begin to work on roads from the Industrial Park to Route 219. Gamesa not only makes turbine blades but they have to be transported too.

Stevens says, "It is modifications to the existing intersection and extending a ramp, making it wider to accommodate the length of the truck."

The road project in the Industrial Park should start next week. Work on Routes 22 and 219 are expected in spring.
