Gas Line Ruptures After Car Crashes Into Cambria County Home

A car crashed into a house in the Johnstown area overnight, rupturing a natural gas line and forcing about 10 families to evacuate in case of an explosion.

The incident happened around midnight on Crystal Street in Brownstown Borough. West Hills police said two people in the car fled after the crash but they later took a 16-year-old into custody and said he will be charged in connection with the crash.

Gas company crews were able to repair the line by 2 a.m. and allowed most of the evacuees to return home.

But, while crews fixed the line, emergency workers ran into another problem. Emergency dispatchers wais they weren't able to reach a Cam-Tran driver to help transport residents until their third call.

Camtran Executive Director Rose Lucey-Noll said the situation was out of the ordinary because the first man on the list was at the hospital, the second driver doesn't work for Camtran anymore and the third man who answered was on his way to help after some time. Before the driver arrived, the Johnstown Party Bus Co. was called in and helped the evacuees.

"Someone suggested that the 911 center call the Johnstown Party Bus over the scanner, so I went ahead and called them and they asked how long before I could be there and I said about 15 minutes ETA so then I responded," said Duane Ream of the Johnstown Party Bus Co.

Camtran has been helping first responders in emergencies for years and has already responded three times this month when 911 called. Camtran representatives said they are fixing the problem so it doesn't happen again.
