Gas war rolls on in Ebensburg

By Maria Miller

EBENSBURG, Pa. —

Plumeting gas prices. It's a story we don't hear much about these days, but on Thursday in Ebensburg gas went down to under $3 a gallon. The national average and the price in Johnstown is still around $3.40. The last time we saw prices under $3 was all the way back in November 2010.

It was just last Friday were 6 News was in Ebensburg trying to find out why gas prices were so much cheaper than anywhere else. One company said it simply comes down to competition.

The Uni Mart/ Exxon station admitted they've been the cheapest for weeks, but on Thursday they took the gas war to a whole different level. According to gasbuddy.com, they became the first station in Pennsylvania to drop below $3 a gallon.

Last Friday people in Johnstown were paying $3.49 for a gallon of gas. Since then it's dropped 10 cents at most places. But in Ebensburg, where people were paying $3.24 a gallon, the price has dropped even more.

Regina Mastillo, who was filling up her tank, said, "$2.93. You can't beat that."

"It's lower everywhere else than in our area," said Ron Schlecht, who drove from Altoona to fill up.

According to CNN, South Carolina was the first state to drop below the $3 mark, but with Exxon in Ebensburg dropping to $2.97 Thursday morning, that makes PA the second state. And they didn't stop there as they dropped to $2.93 by noon

"It was $3.01 and then it dropped again," said Tammi Connah of Nanty Glo. "I was like, 'OK, this is fun, let's drive around and see who has the cheapest gas'."

Tom Martin, Chairman of Martin Oil Co., told us Friday the reason is simple. He said there's a gas war going on. Exxon admitted they are the ones setting the lowest price. And that's forcing the other companies to drop as well.

"I wouldn't say we're hurting, but it certainly doesn't make any sense," said Martin. "Everybody's working on a lot less margin in that area than they are elsewhere."

People waited in long lines to fill up Thursday, many of them out-of-towners.

"I don't know why the prices are so low here but it saves me to do this if I'm in the area," said Bob Ceschini of Nicktown .

"I didn't even need a whole tank," said Connah. "I had half and I never fill up but i'm getting it cause it's cheaper today."

"It can go down another 60 cents from where it was just a few weeks ago, then maybe it come down another 60 cents," said Mastillo.
