Gateway Humane Society at capacity, local businesses start fundraisers to help

By Brittany Boyer

FALLS CREEK, Pa. —

Employees and volunteers are working 24/7 at the Gateway Humane Society in Jefferson County.

In Jefferson County there is no SPCA -- so unwanted animals and strays are taken to the facility in Falls Creek.

Right now workers said they are at capacity and are the busiest they have been in a while.

Recently, workers said a dog breeder surrendered 36 dogs to the organization.

Aside from those dogs, they still have more animals they are trying to find homes for.

"We have 14 dogs ready for adoption, 12 cats that are ready for adoption," said shelter manager, John Weirick.

In an effort to help alleviate the difficulties that surround the organization such as food, utilities and general necessities, local businesses are stepping in to help.

Ferringer's Flowers in Brookville recently kicked off its annual pet food drive. For the last 17 years the business has collected from than 20.5 tons of pet food and has donated more than $21,000 to the Humane Society.

"It's just fulfilling to see the amounts grow from day to day. We feel its been a very good cause," said David Ferringer of Ferringer's Flowers.

Also lending a hand is Richards Expressive in downtown Punxsutawney.

Workers said that it is going out of business and a lot of consignors have chosen to have their items donated.

On Thursday they will be having a bag sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where for $5 per bag you can get anything you want that remains in the store.

Workers said all proceeds will be donated to the Gateway Humane Society.

"We are very appreciative of the community they have been very grateful, helpful to us," Weirick said.
