Group Plans To Help Retired Steelworkers

The United Steelworkers Union is no longer the national force that it was 30 years ago, but it still has many retirees who are concerned about their pensions, health care and the future of their industry.

Now, an effort is underway to mobilize them.

A meeting for retired steelworkers was held in Johnstown on Wednesday hosted by Retirees Mobilizing for Results (REUNION).

The group is a joint effort of the United Steelworkers Union and leading domestic steel producers. The organization's mission is to "mobilize around retiree issues of healthcare, retiree income security, and trade."

Representatives from the group told attendees they want to mobilize retirees to "get things done in Washington."

To that end, the group plans to organize bus trips to Washington to hold demonstrations, though no date is set yet for that to happen.

The group's primary concern seems to be preventing the loss of more retiree benefits, in particular those to be guaranteed by the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation.
