Group Pushes School Board To Reconsider Plans For High School

Centre County —

A group of State College parents and others from the community rallying support in favor of building a new high school and against the school district's plan to renovate gathered Thursday night.

The meeting was the latest step in the group's campaign to have the school board reconsider alternatives to renovating the high school. The group, State High Vision, has been gathering signatures for a petition it will give to the board. The meeting was meant to get public feedback and more support for its plan.

The group wants the district to scrap plans for renovation and look at alternatives like possibly building a new school on the Circleville Farm property or putting a second high school at that location. This, despite the fact that the school board explored various options before voting to renovate. Board members have said chances of them changing plans at this point are highly unlikely. However, the group maintains that the $102 million price tag to renovate is too much and that it would be more cost effective to consider another option.

The group plans to continue to push for the school board to reconsider and wants the public to do the same.

"So we think until there is a hole in the ground we have the opportunity to stop this very expensive project. We are hoping that the swell of public support will say to the board you didn't ask us, but we are here to tell you let's stop and reconsider," said Patty Kleban, an organizer of State High Vision.

Meanwhile, the school board is moving forward with renovation plans. Earlier this week, it submitted a request to the State College Borough Council for rezoning permits that would allow it make changes to the high school.
