Gun Control Roundtable in Centre County

By Stef Davis

STATE COLLEGE, Pa

The gun debate. A hot button topic nationwide and right here at home.

Candace Dannaker, League of Women Voters of Centre County, says, “There’s been a lot of conversation in our community. Some of it is divisive. Because we are all friends and neighbors, it’s important to start having conversations."

To spark those conversations the League of Women Voters of Centre County invited the community to join in with a panel of gun experts. Everyone from police officers to Penn State professors to hunters shared their thoughts on the subject.

Warren leitzel, panelist and avid hunter, says, "I want to make sure that when people talk about gun legislation, they consider the age old craft of ours and let it continue for a long long time."

The audience asked questions to the panel--topics ranging from gun bans to school safety. And while the opinions differed, one thing remained agreed upon. Gun legislation must be dealt with carefully.

Dr. Julie Horney, PSU professor, says, “I think it’s important that what we do is based on what works, what doesn’t work and we carefully evaluate policy changes that we make.”
