Gun Found At Local School; Police Not Concerned

A student says he forgot about a rifle sitting in his trunk.

The superintendent of Conemaugh Valley School District said they are doing an investigation with police and the student was suspended immediately.

Officers involved in the case said the student was truly remorseful for bringing the gun to school in his car, and is an outstanding student in the district.

The gun was found after parking lot patrol workers saw cartridges lying near the front seat.

Officials at the school said they will be discussing further action after the Labor Day Weekend, but police said unless the school makes a request, they do not plan to file criminal charges.

Some parents of Conemaugh Valley students told Channel 6 News that although students should know better after incidents at Columbine and Virginia Tech.

Many parents also said they understand that the student may have just made a mistake.
