Gyms See Spike In Memberships

By Rich Wisniewski

BROOKVILLE, Pa —

For the average gym goer, this is the time of year they hate. The gym they go to is filled with eager folks who made the New Years resolution to get in shape.

However, while many are hating the crowded gyms and minimal parking availability, those who work in the fitness industry are loving January.

"As far as the gym goes, this is when we kinda get bombarded," said Tina Householder, manager of the YMCA in Brookville.

For her gym, and thousands of others around the country, January is the best time of year because of those individuals who made the promise to workout and get in shape, and so they're cashing in by buying a gym membership.

"I mean we can see at least 300 more people around this time of year," she added.

Most likely they're expected to see anywhere from 150-200 people walk through the doors, ready to get in shape.

The increase in memberships means more traffic in the gym, and average gym-goers can see the boom.

"I mean this time of year if you come in here around five, six o'clock your waiting to get on a treadmill, and it's just a lot more people in here," said Chris Lasher, a Brookville resident.

The problem for gyms -in comparison to January- it only gets worse. The numbers will drop off and the traffic in the gym will die down.

"Summer time this place is like a ghosttown, everyone's outside enjoying the weather," jokes Lasher.

Which is why gyms almost have to rely on January. Householder, says this month has a big hand in their yearly budget numbers. Having a strong January can help them later in the year, so when and if sales numbers die down, they don't have to sweat it out, they can leave that up to those working out.
