Food Journal Helps 'Losing It' Participant Shed Pounds

Since joining the "Losing It In The Alleghenies" program, Brad Costigan said his lifestyle has done a complete 180-degree turnaround.

Costigan exercises regularly, rarely eats out anymore and even broke one of his worst habits.

"I would eat because I was bored. Sitting in front of the TV late at night -- 9, 10 o'clock … I'd get up and go look for something," he said.

But now, with the help of his trainer at Precision Fitness, Costigan uses a food journal to keep his eating on track.

"I would look at my food journal and it's a visual and I can see what I've eaten so far that day," Costigan said. "And it's, 'You know what, I'm going to pass,' because if I cheat once, I'm going to cheat again."

It’s a technique that his trainer, George Grove, endorses wholeheartedly.

"It keeps you aware of what you're eating and putting in your mouth," Grove said. "With a food journal, it's right there in front of you."

The hardest part for Costigan so far has been getting to the gym. The stay-at-home dad needs a flexible routine as he cares for two young children while his wife works long hours.

Grove said Costigan is doing a great job at staying dedicated, however.

"What I call what he goes through, I call them potholes. OK, you're driving along the road, you're bound to hit a pothole. Now, the key is when you hit that pothole, or that life event, is to stay on the road, and keep on the road instead of veering to the left or the right and kind of forgetting everything you've learned. He's done a great job of that," Grove said.

Today, Costigan is lighter, leaner and healthier, not to mention motivated.

"It's the accountability. To know that people are going to see me on TV … I don't want to let everyone else down. I want to see results, I don't want to be known as the person who didn't lose their weight," Costigan said.

At last check, Costigan lost 16 pounds in just more than two months, lost 5 inches off his waist and his body fat dropped more than 4 percent.
