Highland Community Library Finds Support

Amidst deep state cuts, library administrators are finding creative ways of finding the money they need to make improvements.

"We really can no longer depend on state funding. We depend on the community for programs and service," said Dorene Miller, director of Highland Community Library.

Highland Community Library in Richland Township recently installed new carpeting and upgraded its children area. Leaders were able to make the improvements because of state grants. Its not the typical way of financing upgrades. The grants are competitive and not guaranteed but with a tight state budget, it is a necessity.

"Its become critical to research different grant opportunities and apply for them," said Miller.

Miller said the library is also reaching out to the community for support. Last year the library held a community wine festival. It was so successful they plan on doing it again this year.
