Holiday Travel And Bad Roads

It Could Cost You

A new report published just in time for Memorial Day weekend travel, shows one in four miles of our interstates, freeways, and local roads are in poor shape and need repairs.

Arthur Faner is used to traveling. He's been a van driver in Somerset County for 10 years. He said he transports 10 passengers and one in a wheel chair at once.

"Sometimes I have to make sure that wheel chair is strapped down really tight because of the potholes and stuff that I run through. Not just the potholes, but the choppiness on all the roadways," said Faner.

Those holes and cracks in the roads can cause major travel headaches, and a big dent in your checkbook. The new travel report says if you drive near or through cities annually, the wear and tear on your car could be close to $400 a year. In our region some say they're used to a bumpy ride.

Emily Bloom of Ebensburg says, "Given the weather around here it's kind of inevitable, but I definitely think more could be done."

PennDot says they are doing more. You can't help but see the construction on highways in the region like the heavily traveled 219, and they've bought a new product for paving workers they say will last longer.

Joe Kelemen of PennDot says, "The SuperPave material that we have is a stronger mix. It basically does not rut as much as what the I.D. wearing did."

If you see an area of roadway that needs fixed, call PennDot at 1-800-FIX-ROAD. Also, as you travel through construction zones this weekend, make sure you drive slowly for the safety of workers.
