Holiday Travel Begins

Somerset County —

At three o'clock this afternoon, The Pennsylvania Turnpike was pretty much construction free and that will continue with at least four lanes open until next Monday, November 28 at 6 AM.

The Turnpike Commission expects 2.7 million travelers on the toll road this Thanksgiving holiday. They hope the construction-free holiday will expedite the process for you to get from point A to point B. Also, oversized and overweight commercial vehicles are banned until Monday.

But, before you think you can just speed through the turnpike, additional troopers will be on duty to ensure your safety; some are specifically looking for seatbelt violations.

Those traveling this cold Tuesday night like they way things are working so far.

"It was wonderful. I've traveled the Pennsylvania Turnpike before and this was one of the best times. Why? Because no construction, no barrels to go around, no long lines of traffic. It was great," says traveler Jacquelyn Johnson.

If you are worried about the snowy cold weather, The Turnpike Commission says maintenance crews are ready at a moment's notice.
