Hollidaysburg Going Butt-Free

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. —

They are the most littered item in America --cigarette butts. But now one local community is trying to get their sidewalks butt-free and keep them that way.

The effort is part of a program called Keep America Beautiful and Hollidaysburg was picked to participate. It is getting grant money to pass out pocket ash trays to residents. Also, smokers will soon be seeing ash receptacles lining the sidewalks in downtown Hollidaysburg. The receptacles are made by the local company, New Pig, in Tipton.

Borough officials said although they don't have enough receptacles to line every street, it's still important for all smokers to go the extra mile to dispose of their butts, because all of the litter is a problem across the community. They're also hoping other communities follow suit.

The main street manager said they've passed out some of the ash trays to local stores that sell cigarettes, but they'll be passing out more this week. They will also be putting out the ash receptacles as soon they can rig up a system to bolt them down.
