Homeless Vets Get Christmas Meal

By Rich Wisniewski

COALPORT, Pa —

It's Christmas, the time to be with friends and family; the time to share stories and laughter.

During this time of friends, family, and laughter, many people don't think that there is someone, somewhere waking up with nowhere to go and no one to see. Unfortunately, some of those people waking up are veterans, who find themselves homeless in the same country they fought so hard to protect.

At Tomorrow's Hope, a homeless shelter for veterans  located in Coalport, Clearfield County, many  vet's woke up this morning and are homeless. They have no family, or home. But they are just happy to wake up with a shelter over their head.

"If it wouldn't have been for here, I would be sleeping in the front seat of my truck, eating a McDonalds hamburger; maybe," said Don Tomsa, one of the guys staying at Tomorrow's Hope.

Tomsa, served in the Navy, but on this Christmas morning, he woke up in a homeless shelter, surrounded by other men who have similar stories and feelings today.

"It's still pretty damn lonely," he said.

However,  the men at Tomorrow's Hope got a special Christmas meal courtesy of the AM Vets organization.

"This is what we do, veterans helping veterans," said Scott Koening, a member of the AM Vets.

The meal consisted of turkey, ham, stuffing, potatoes, and anything else to fill their hungry stomachs, it was donated to them from the AM Vets.

"I feel like a king," said Eric Perry, a former soldier, who is now staying at Tomorrow's Hope.

But the AM Vets were also hoping to fill the guys hearts too.

"Even if you can just come down and talk to them, listen to them, it will send chills up your spine," said Koenig.

But it wasn't just food, the Vets at Tomorrow's Hope also got to open gifts that were donated to them from people and organizations around the area. This Christmas was so special for the men, that one vet said, "this is the best Christmas I ever had."
