Homelessness Growing Problem In Somerset County

SOMERSET, Pa. —

Leaders at homeless help agencies like Tableland Services of Somerset County said they are seeing more cases of homelessness in the area each year.

The most recent numbers show about 100 people in Somerset are living on the streets, 14 of those are children.

Case Manager for Tableland, Sherry Kreger said it's a hidden problem in the area because many of the homeless will sleep in rural areas, stay in stores overnight, or will commit crimes to get themselves booked into the county jail.

Shelters in the area are also overwhelmed, operating sometimes over their capacity.

Because of funding issues and the state of the local economy, Kreger is fearful the problem will just continue to get worse each year.
