Horse rescued from ravine doing well

By Melanie Gillespie

CONFLUENCE, Pa. —

A horse rescue in Confluence, Somerset County turned out for the best.

Crews were called out early Friday morning to assist a horse that was stuck in a ravine.

It didn't take long for Engine's owner to figure out something wasn't right Friday morning.

The three horses Kelli Arrich owns usually stick together, but one wasn't in its pasture.

"I call them my girls. I love them as much as my daughter," Arrich said.

Arrich owns Mouse, Engine and Tawnie. Engine is the 38-year-old white Appaloosa, and her owner said, she's usually the leader of the group.

"She's like my first horse… put a lot of miles in with her. And we know each other inside and out. I just love her to pieces," Arrich said.

Arrich said it's unusual for the three to separate, but thought some kind of disturbance frightened them Friday morning.

Engine ended up slipping into a ravine that she couldn't get out of.

"She was laying flat on her side and she couldn't move at all. She was very cold and shivering. I couldn't really tell if any of her legs were broke because she was surrounded by big rocks," Arrich explained.

Arrich wasn't sure if she was going to make it, but Engine let her owner know, she wasn't giving up just yet.

"I started walking up the road, hollering for her, and she let out a whinny," Arrich said.

Engine was still alive and fighting to get her footing, but she needed help.

"And I just kind of threw my hands in the air, and said 'I don't know what we're going to do about this.' I mean she's a 1200 pound horse and the boulders that were stuck around her were probably 600 pounds themselves," Arrich said.

Arrich called Addison Volunteer Fire Department. The department had never even responded to a horse rescue call, but managed to pull Engine to her feet.

Engine was able to walk home -- on her own.

"You know, you just can't believe that after all of that she's still alive," Arrich said.

Arrich told 6 News she can't thank the fire department enough for being so careful with Engine.

Luckily, Engine is just walking away with a couple of scrapes and bruises.
