Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. Ten million Americans became victims of identity theft last year. So Good Housekeeping has some important tips for keeping your personal information private.
Identity theft is more than just a couple of charges on your credit card," says Wally Konrad, Money Editor, Good Housekeeping. "Clever thieves can use your personal information to take out a loan, start a new business or even lease a car and take off. Thats why its so important to check your credit report regularly.
A special website has been set up where you can request a free credit report once a year from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, the three largest credit bureaus. Its at: annualcreditreport.com. If using the web makes you nervous, use the phone instead. Just call 877-322-8228.
"When you order your credit report, ask that the first five digits from your social security number be removed," says Konrad. "That adds an extra layer of protection against identity theft.
A good rule is: never toss without tearing up those junk mail offers for new credit cards. Another tip:
Never carry anything in your wallet with your social security number on it," says Konrad. "And dont ever carry your ATM pin number either. Even if you put it in a separate compartment, thieves arent stupid. Theyre gonna figure it out.
If your wallet is stolen or lost, call any of the big credit bureaus and they can put a 90-day fraud alert on your credit report. Good Housekeeping has more guidelines for preventing identity theft: Put your torn-up financial records in bags of wet garbage or use a shredder. And try not to give out your Social Security number if you are asked. A lot of companies will accept alternate forms of ID.
