Human Service Funding Stays Even

By Rich Wisniewski

CLEARFIELD, Pa —

In recent years, areas of Human Services in Pennsylvania have seen their budgets cut.

However, this year that's not the case.

"We remained at last years numbers. He [Governor Corbett] said he will continue to work to make more money available," said Joan Robinson McMillen, a Clearfield County Commissioner.

Human Services are an important area consisting of things like child services, mental health, and the Drug and Alcohol Commission. Providing enough funding helps the county address the needs that might arise.

The added bonus this year is the Human Service Block Grant. This year, 20 counties, including Clearfield and Centre County will be receiving it here in Pennsylvania.  The money will allow local government officials to distribute the money where they see fit (in the area of Human Services). Officials say having that money is a big help considering how expensive that area is in a county budget.

"This year when we were doing the budget, Clearfield County Children and Youth and Family Services was $800,000 more then the previous year," added McMillen.

She says, that's hard to balance a budget while still promising not to raise taxes or cut staff anywhere.

Governor Corbett's budget plan does have it's winners and losers. But overall, county officials in Clearfield say they were happy with it. Especially because that money could change a childs life.

"Government does not need to be involved in our lives anymore then possible but we do need to provide every child with a safe home to live in.
