Hundreds gather at Penn State vigil for Connecticut victims

By WJAC Web Staff

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. —

The victims of Friday's tragedy at a Connecticut elementary school were remembered Sunday night on Penn State's University Park campus.

Hundreds gathered in front of Old Main for a candlelight vigil. Among those taking part were some students who attended Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., themselves as children.

They said they were thankful for the outpouring of love and support for their community from across the country, but just about all those in attendance were still in shock

"It's so upsetting. There are no words," said Gretchen Gurganus, a Penn State sophomore.

Kayleigh Shawl, who is also a sophomore at Penn State, said, "I think it's great that we're coming together to show our support for the people suffering because of this tragedy."

Also remembered during last night's campus vigil is a Penn State graduate student who is recovering from a knife attack near Sunset Park last week. The search continues for the assailant in that crime.
