Hundreds Of Cats Removed From Elk County Animal Shelter

ST. MARYS, Pa. —

Officials removed hundreds of cats from an Elk County rescue shelter on Thursday.

Crews found around 400 cats in the Animal Friends of Elk and Cameron Counties shelter in St. Marys.

Around 50 people were on the scene loading the cats into crates.

They were then taken to an undisclosed location in Elk County.

Officials said many of the cats were in critical condition.

They added that some of the cats have feline leukemia.

The Animal Friends shelter has been in St. Marys for several years.

Officials from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was alerted the problems at the shelter by the Elk County Humane Society.

Officials said the cats will be evaluated over the next two weeks.

It is not known whether the owner of the shelter will face charges.

WJAC-TV has been unable to reach the shelter officials.
