Hundreds Oppose Wind Farm Project

CENTRAL CITY, Pa. —

The push for green energy is causing more and more wind turbines to be built in the Alleghenies. For the most part, the opposition has been minor, but when it comes to Shaffer Mountain in Somerset and Bedford counties, it is a battle.

As part of Gamesa's application process for the wind farm, a public meeting on the project was held Tuesday night. About 500 people crowded into the Shade Central City High School gymnasium for the permit meeting.

Those against the wind farm interrupted Gamesa speakers with shouts, while others with signs paraded their message that they were opposed to the project at that specific location.

Gamesa wants to put up a 30-turbine wind farm on Shaffer Mountain, which would run through parts of Shade and Ogle Townships in Somerset County and in Napier Township in Bedford County.

Officials from the state Game Commission, Fish and Boat Commission and Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said they are concerned about the potential impact of the turbine project.

However, amid the protest, there were those in support of the wind farms: a group of local Gamesa workers.

All environmental concerns will be reviewed by the Department of Environmental Protection, but first, the Somerset County Conservation District must approve the technical portion of the application.
