Hunter May Have Been Shot In Back

An investigation is underway into the death of a hunter whose body was found Tuesday night in Jefferson County.

First responders believed the 27-year-old man may have been shot in the back.

State Game Commission officials said the shooting happened around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday on property along State Route 36 in Gaskill Township.

The game commission has not released the name of the man, but said he is from the Punxsutawney area.

Game commission officials said they did not know who may have fired the shot, but said it was not self-inflicted. Officials did not say whether they have a suspect in mind.

Mike Girosky, of the Pennsylvania Game Commission said, "We basically treat this the same way the police would treat a homicide. We're going to investigate it and try to gather as much evidence as we possibly can and hopefully we will be able to find the person who committed this."

State police were at the scene of the shooting Wednesday afternoon. Stay with Channel 6 News for continuing coverage.
