Hunters Can Enjoy New Game Land This Season

People were buzzing with excitement Tuesday morning after the Game Commission revealed its latest purchase.

After waiting 14 years, the Game Commission was able to make the $5.4 million purchase of State Game Land 87.

In 1997, the game commission missed purchasing the property.

Decades ago this same land served as part of the coal mining industry. The land has since been reclaimed and officials say wildlife is still here.

Tuesday morning dozens of officials, community members, and neighbors showed up to see the new sign revealed.

Both residents and officials told WJAC, Tuesday was a good day for hunters.

"This is something that is really important to us. Our family has always been hunters," said resident Lisa Yoder.

"The amount of calls that we got once we purchased this and settled on it has been tremendous. A lot of interest has been shown on this property, and a lot of non-residents were calling about it. I can see a lot of tourists coming in to hunt," said Pennsylvania Game Commission Regional Director, Dennis Dusza.

Officials reminded people that the game lands are not just for hunting. People can come out for recreational activities, like hiking. Officials remind visitors that ATV's are not permitted on game land property.
