CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. —

Police are searching for the driver who struck and killed a woman on Interstate 99 south in Centre County early Tuesday.

Pennsylvania State Police said Sherry R. Houtz, 32, of Bellefonte, was killed.

Houtz was last seen at the Sheetz store on Benner Pike at 2:15 a.m.

Investigators said the apparent hit-and-run happened on the interstate between exits 73 and 71 near State College's Toftrees and Route 322 exits sometime between 3:45 a.m. and 4 a.m.

State police at the Rockview barracks are asking anyone who has information or who traveled on I-99 during that time to call them at 814-355-7545.

Traffic was detoured on I-99 south around the crash location and the interstate reopened around 10:30 a.m., Pennsylvania Department of Transportation officials said.

Officials are working to reconstruct the crash and the investigation is ongoing. State Police said they believe Houtz was struck by a car or a pickup truck, which would have front-end damage. They do not believe she was struck by a semitrailer.
