Illegal Sales At Thunder In The Valley

Cambria County —

Four people were arrested over the weekend at Thunder in the Valley for selling illegal merchandise. They now face charges. This may not sound like a big deal to some, but Thunder in the Valley organizers are not happy and losing out.

Two women and two men were caught selling fake Thunder in the Valley shirts and hats. They were set up throughout downtown. One man sold an unofficial Thunder shirt but was not arrested, claiming he didn't use the event logo. That's what's on the real shirts provided by the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The logo is trademarked. The merchandise is how the Convention and Visitors Bureau makes some of the money to support Thunder in the Valley.

Lisa Dailey, with the Convention and Visitors Bureau, said, "Even if it's somebody else set up saying Event T-shirts or Johnstown Bike Week or Johnstown Cycle Rally, they're not the official shirts. So it's money that's not going into our pocket to support what we're doing."

Captain Andy Frear of the Johnstown Police Department says, "To the best of my knowledge, this is the first time I remember having unlicensed merchandise at a Thunder in the Valley event."

There's no way to tell how much money was lost according to the Convention and Visitors Bureau. They don't know how much merchandise was sold or if buyers would have bought the real ones. The vendors with the fake merchandise could face a fine, jail time, or both.
