INDIANA, Pa. —

A district attorney says federal prosecutors will try a man accused of embezzling about $1 million from a gas drilling firm Indiana County.

The defense attorney for 52-year-old Larry Winckler, of Indiana, didn't immediately return a call for comment Wednesday.

State police dropped charges against Winckler on Tuesday when Indiana County District Attorney Patrick Dougherty announced the U.S. Attorney's Office in Pittsburgh would take over the case.

The federal prosecutor's office didn't immediately return a call for comment.

Police say the company's controller -- who quit in February and hasn't been charged -- contends Winkler ordered her to write him a check from Falcon Drilling Co. in 2005 when he "desperately needed money" and that she and Winkler have since stolen up to $5 million.

Winckler had been charged only with stealing $955,000 found missing so far.
