Inside look at local school security after Connecticut tragedy

By Stef Davis

WINGATE, Pa. —

An eye in the sky. Surveillance video from the security system at the Bald Eagle Area School District is a safety precaution that’s been in place for years.

“Parents rightfully send their kids, the most precious thing they have, to school with the expectation that they'll be safe,” said Dan Fisher, Bald Eagle Area superintendent.

In wake of the tragedy in Connecticut, Fisher said he's been hearing from parents about their safety concerns.

Fisher adds, “There is always going to be risks, but we've done a lot of things to mitigate the exposure.”

That includes 70 cameras keeping watching over school grounds, an in-tact emergency response plan, and safety drills conducted by the state police -- whose Rockview barracks happen to be next door.

Fisher said while a school should of course be secure, it shouldn't be a fortress. Parents and visitors should feel welcome while students and teachers feel safe.

Fisher notes, “It’s a balancing act -- making the school user-friendly, yet as secure as possible.”
