Is Crimewatch Program Needed In Johnstown Community?

After a shooting in Johnstown - one community decided it's time for changes in their neighborhood.

John Grumbling grew up in Walnut Grove and he's proud to call it his home - but he and some of his neighbors are concerned about their community - so they held a meeting to talk about problems.

Traditionally Walnut Grove has been like the lost province in Johnstown. "We're separated from the city by other townships and boroughs. We're not close to the rest of the city at all. To get services out here it seems like we're the last people in line," he says.

The community decided - if they really are seen that way - they need to be proactive in changing it. One suggestion? Send a representative to city council meetings each week to discuss concerns. They also suggested a neighborhood watch program - just weeks ago, this usually quiet community - disrupted by gunfire.

Pastor Neil Leftwich says, "I'm sure that the shooting illicited a lot of fears in the minds of people and there were a lot of folks that were really shook up that it happened right here in a church parking lot."

Kids skateboard in the parking lot almost everyday - and houses surround the lot - Johnstown Police Captain Andy Frear showed up and explained - watch programs can help communities - by calling the police when you see anything out of the ordinary. There will be another meeting next Thursday - at the Homestead Avenue United Methodist Church at seven pm. Pastor Leftwich says if changes need to be made - more in the community need to come out and offer their suggestions.
