Jefferson County Elementary School To Close In June

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. —

Time is ticking down for one Jefferson County elementary school.

After more than 60 years, Mary A. Wilson Elementary will close in June.

The Punxsutawney school board voted to close the school in April.

District officials said the building needed costly repairs and the district is facing declining enrollment.

Some residents have banded together opposing the district's decision.

One group, known as "Mary A. Moms," campaigned against school board members who voted to close the school.

Two board members were defeated in May's primary election.

"We're proud of the community and voter turnout," said Jaime Sherry. "A lot of people came out because of that vote."

The last day of classes at Mary A. Wilson Elementary is June 9.

The school board will vote in June on whether to let students from first to fifth grade take home library books, or even their desks, as souvenirs.
