Jefferson County Gardener Grows Huge Tomato Plant

BELL TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

People from across Jefferson County are making the trip to Bell Township to see a massive tomato plant.

Jim Umbaugh's plant started out in June as a three-inch seedling.

The tomato plant now stands at 14 feet.

Umbaugh said the plant grows about three to four inches a week.

It's been a tough growing season for many farmers and gardeners who have seen their tomatoes destroyed by late blight.

Umbaugh said none of his plants were affected by the blight.

He's planning to enclose the tomato plant this winter so it will continue to grow.
