Job Loss Hitting Somerset CountY

Somerset County —

Meyersdale Manufacturing will close up its uniform making plant August 31st, consolidating its work with another plant. Union, county, and borough representatives met to discuss their options.

However, according to Meyersdale Manufacturing employee and union president, Theresa Kelly, the meeting was not very hopeful. She had hoped the meeting would create options to save their jobs, or at least make it easier for another company to move in.

After working at the plant for 35 years, Theresa is scared.

"I'm not sure of what is going to happen. I mean I own my own house. Am I going to be able to keep it? My grandkids come to visit and I won't be able to take a vacation with them," she says.

Besides Theresa, there are 79 others that will lose their jobs: like Ruth, Carol, and Lexy. It is very personal to them, but the grim reality of it is its just business.

"Yah, it gets a bit personal, but you have to come back that it is business and there has to be a return on investment in any endeavor," says Nick Felice of the Somerset County Economic Development Council.

The president of ELBECO Incorporated, which owns the local plant, says foreign competition and a shift in market lead to the closure.

Still, Mr. Felice and Theresa have hope someone will buy the plant.

"We will fight til the end," adds Kelly.

The Meyersdale employees will be offered skills courses and some even a chance to move with the company. Still though, many of the workers planned on retiring with Meyersdale Manufacturing, not looking for a new job at the end of their career.
