Johnstown City Council Talks Layoffs

CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. —

A special meeting for Johnstown City Council was held Monday evening as members determine how to deal with a $600,000 budget deficit.

The meeting was heated at times, but in the end Councilman Jack Williams stood alone in his motion to lay off city employees.

It was standing-room only as city workers, police officers and their families filled the room to hear council battle it out over their jobs.

Councilman Nunzio Johncola accused Williams of jumping the gun by proposing 11 layoffs, and causing workers to panic needlessly.

The motion was voted down. Many council members said they want to work together to find a solution to the $600,000 budget deficit.

Councilwoman Ann Wilson said they have to work with the recovery team because there are certain rules the distressed city must follow.

Also at the meeting, council voted to accept the resignation of City Manager Curt Davis. It's not known who will be acting city manager for the time being.
