Johnstown Companies Selected As Finalists For Military Contract

Local companies said a potential military contract would not only protect jobs, but also help U.S. troops overseas.

JWF Industries and Lockheed Martin spend four years of their own time and combined millions of dollars out of their own pocket to develop and test a new vehicle that will replace the Humvee.

Rep. John Murtha, a Democrat from the 12th District, "This was a worldwide competition. We're talking about 150,000 vehicles (and) probably an $80 billion contract in the end."

Bill Polacek of JWF Industries said, "After four years of fighting hard and coming up with multiple designs, (we) finally have a vehicle that's ahead of the competition."

The 10-year deal could create up to 1,000 new jobs. Over the next two years, JWF and Lockheed will continue to test and modify their new vehicle, which is low-weight and mobile for rough terrain and offers superior armor protection.
