Johnstown Councilman Proposes Four-Day Workweek

In an effort to deal with a $600,000 budget deficit, a Johnstown councilman said a shortened workweek would be a way to avoid layoffs or tax hikes.

Red Pinizzotto said he wants council to vote on creating a four-day work week in lieu of laying off police or public works employees. He also said the last thing he wants to do is raise property taxes and believes the shortened workweek would avoid that.

Pinizzotto said the city needs police and public safety crews, so instead of being short-handed, he wants everyone in those departments to give up a day of work.

If that happens, workers would be paid for a 32-hour workweek instead of 40 hours.

He said he believes four of the nine councilmen would support a four-day workweek, and now he hopes to get local union representatives on his side.

The vote is scheduled for Monday at 5 p.m., and Pinizzotto encouraged people to come and voice their opinions.
