Johnstown Couple Prepares For Quadruplets

Tammy and Mike Atterbury were ecstatic when their doctor finally delivered the news they were expecting their first child.

With a June due date, the Atterburys thought they were ahead of the game -- that is until their last doctor's appointment.

The Johnstown couple learned that they will be adding not one, but four new member to their family.

At first, a nurse told them she thought she heard two heartbeats, but the ultrasound revealed the surprise that turned their lives upside down.

"(We) went in expecting to find out if (we were) going to have a boy or a girl, and we got two of each," Mike Atterbury said. "So, it was quite the shock."

The Atterburys said they are excited about their little bundles of joy, but -- not surprisingly -- they're also nervous.

Mike said he's calculated they'll use about 1,200 diapers a month, if each baby uses 10 a day. They'll also need four car seats -- and a vehicle large enough to transport the family.

But, the Atterburys are concerned that they have no family closer than Kansas. The couple moved to Johnstown in 2005 for Mike's job as a commuter pilot, a position that earns less than $20,000 a year and required him to pick up a second job. With Tammy on bed rest, the couple is losing an income.

"We thought, 'Yeah, it's the right time. We've got a baby on the way; we'll be fine, we can do it.' But four of them makes it a little more difficult. ... So it's just every father's concern to take care of the family," he said.

Still, Mike said his main focus is keeping Tammy rested and fed and "keeping the babies healthy so we can get them here and get them home healthy."
