Johnstown Homeowner Wants Lawyer In Animal Cruelty Case

Melissa Mayall Requested Lawyer In Animal Cruelty Case

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. —

Melissa Mayall was cited with animal cruelty after Johnstown police said she left dogs, cats and pigs inside an unsanitary home on Oak Street.

Mayall headed to court Tuesday to face the citations, but instead asked Magistrate Leonard Grecek for a chance to get a lawyer.

Grecek gave her a week to acquire an attorney and continued the case another two weeks.

Neighbors showed up to the court hearing Tuesday and told WJAC-TV they are furious for the delays.

Melissa Coleman lives next door.

"This has been going on for over a year and now she thinks she needs an attorney," said Coleman.

Coleman and other neighbors said the house is filled with garbage and feces and is swarming with bugs.

Frank Coleman said, "It's like we're being held hostage. The bugs. The smell. You can't even sit on your own porch because there are flies everywhere."

City officials already condemned the home, but said legally they can't demolish it without the owner's permission.

Even though neighbors are commending police for getting Mayall to court, they just want it to be over.

Lisa Brown said, "The animals are gone, that's a blessing, but now us neighbors are dealing with the aftermath."
