Johnstown Land To Be Tax Free

The final hurdle has been cleared - in making 200 acres of land a tax free area.

Greater Johnstown School Board members voted Wednesday to approve the designation for the land behind Bethlehem Steel's Old Lower Works building. City Council members and County Commissioners had already voted to make the land a Keystone Opportunity Zone - but the school board also had to approve the move... because taxes on the land go to the district.

School Superintendent Barbara Parkins says, "In the long run, because right now we aren't getting anything for property and at least this way there is some revenue coming in... and if it does bring in any job opportunities we may have some of those folks living in area and being part of the school district."

The school board voted unanimously for the designation.
