Johnstown Landmarks In Trouble

Johnstown —

For now it looks like the Bandshell will come down as previously thought. For some here it's a landmark. For others it's becoming a problem. City officials say it hasn't been used in years. Vandals are also making it their playground at Roxbury Park. The structure itself is just falling apart piece by piece. To save the Bandshell would take a lot more funding. Neighbors trying to have been given a week. For now the city's demolition plans go on. The plans for the stones are to incorporate them into Johnstown's new festival park. Channel 6 News caught up with with Shaina Parkins and Jessica Sklinar running in Roxbury. They have different opinions on the Bandshell. Sklinar says, "I would care. I'm used to seeing it. It's been here forever. And I think a lot of people would miss it." Parkins disagrees, saying, "The space could be utilized better actually if it wasn't in a condition to stay up.

The city says getting rid of the Bandshell could free up more space for parking at Roxbury Park.

There also continued debate over another Johnstown landmark. What will happen to the Gallo newsstand? Its been around forever it seems. Those downtown during the day depend on it. So what is it's future finally? The newsstand is moving according to city officials. But as Channel 6 News has told you before, it's not going far. Its moving just a few parking spaces down to the alley by City Hall.

The city wants to make Market and Vine Streets two way again. That's the reason for the newsstand move. The Gallo's had been in litigation, but finally agreed to it. The city is now trying to help them by raising funds among city businesses to get the $1,000 moving fee. Customers getting their papers and lottery tickets Thursday say they'll go where Gallo's goes.

Rick Olstein is a customer. He says, "It's like an institution. I don't mind them moving it down just a little bit but it makes no difference. I'm still going to stop here and give them their business."

The Gallo's newsstand should be moved within the month. Then Market and Vine will be made two way streets and the traffic lights will soon be synchronized. Its all part of a million dollar project.
