Johnstown Predicts $600,000 Budget Shortfall, May Cut Jobs

Johnstown officials said they may eliminate 11 jobs, including three newly hired police officers, because of a projected $600,000 budget shortfall.

City leaders called a special meeting for Monday to consider the cuts.

Police union representatives said they will fight any job cuts. Johnstown's recreation director, four public works laborers and a mechanic are also at risk.

The city is not the only entity to be affected by the state budget impasse. Officials at the Women's Help Center in Johnstown said they were notified their state funding would be reduced by $84,000. More cuts would lie ahead and they may cut five staff positions.

Workers at the Help Center said 75 percent of the center's funding comes from the state. The rest comes from fundraisers and donations.

The state budget impasse has put a squeeze on public libraries as well. In Blair County, libraries are planning to close for a day and stage a county-wide protest if there's no budget in place by Labor Day weekend.

The Altoona public library is reducing its hours from 65 a week to 50, even though the library has had a 20 percent increase in the number of people using its services.
